8th Annual AFSS Christmas Campaign For Children

Published December 22, 2015

Annual Event

2014 marked the 8th year that the Armenian Family Support Services organized the Christmas Campaign for Children (formerly known as Adopt a Child for Christmas campaign), which helps support deserving families and children in the GTA to celebrate the holiday season. Through donations from the community, we were able to produce gift packages consisting of toys, clothing, chocolates, gift cards, and goodie bags including health and food products which were packaged and then personally delivered by our volunteers.

On Saturday December 20th, 2014, AFSS received a large number of toys gathered by St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School for the needy families and children on our list. On Sunday December 21st, 2014, our amazing team came together and began preparing gift bags for deserving families and children. These bags were prepared with a lot of love and Christmas spirit, and each gift bag was personalized to the child it was for.

We are immensely grateful to all our supporters, donors and all of the volunteers. We would like to give a big thank you to St. Sahag and St. Mesrop Armenian Saturday School for their Toy Drive in support of the children.  Also, special recognition to Mrs. Seza Nazarian for leading this compassionate mission year after year. We are so grateful to all the people who have supported the children by donating a toy or making a financial contribution. You all have shown the true spirit of Christmas by giving to those in need.

Board members, staff and volunteers of Armenian Family Support Services had the pleasure of meeting with the Honourable Chris Alexander, newly appointed Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister at the Holy Trinity Armenian Church. The Minister spent over two hours with our community, taking a tour of the church and then meeting with everyone at a round table discussion about immigration and the plight of refugees from Syria and other war-torn countries.  Topics discussed included the role that associations such as AFSS have in helping newcomers transition into their new lives in Canada, as well as mentoring initiatives and future pilot projects involving local outreach groups.  Attendees of the meeting were left with an optimistic and bright outlook for the future of immigrants and new citizens in Canada.
